DIY : The Overlooked Small, Light, and Quiet Generator Setup
If generator size and weight is a problem or concern for you, this is the solution.
Most generators are large and heavy, making them difficult to use. There’s an alternative option to large heavy generators that’s overlooked by most, it’s called generator paralleling. Generator paralleling sounds complex at first, but its actually an extremely simply method that uses 1 cord to connect 2 small generators together. Combining these two small generators will double the power, making them powerful enough to meet your needs. If you are looking for a small and light generator setup with big power, this is what you need.
Generator Sizing
Watts is the measurement used to size generators. A generators wattage represents the amount of power it produces. The more watts a generator produces, the bigger it is.
How to determine the size you need:
Appliances with a motor can use 3 times as many watts at startup. Generators have surge watts to help them compensate for motor startup.
1. You will need the rated wattage for each appliance your generator would be powering. Use the chart below to help you figure out the wattage of your appliances.Your appliance wattage may differ from the wattage shown in the chart. You can find an appliance’s exact wattage on its information tag.
2. Add the wattage of each appliance together
3. The wattage of the generator you’re buying should be equal or greater to the total wattage of your appliances
Below I’ve listed generators that are designed for paralleling. To parallel, you will need 2 generators that are the same model.
