DIY : GIANT WOODEN LETTERS – Mason Patrick – Medium
- YOUR CONCEPT
Even though, giant wooden letters aren’t as artsy as making a banner, you still need to plan your design before starting. What size do you want the letters to be? How will you transport your letters? What events are the letters going to be used for? What colors are you going to use?
All of those questions really effect your design and what you need to prep for. If you’re just using them for events, then you can use some cheaper stuff, but if they’re going to sit outside of your chapter house for months then prepare for that!
- GATHERING THE MATERIALS
You want to get luan wood. You’ll also need to get your paints. I recommend spray paint, since the letters are so big, but it depends if you have a solid color v.s. a complex design. If the letters will be outside, then make sure that you get a weather coat spray!
You’ll also need timber wood, if you are planning on building supports for the letters.
2. CUTTING THE WOOD
Next up, you want to trace out your letters on the wood using a marker. It doesn’t need to be perfect! You’ll paint over the marker!
Then, get either a power saw or a handsaw and cut the pieces out! Be careful! These letters are pretty awesome, but not worth losing a finger over!
3. PAINT IT
Now, if this is your first time painting letters, I recommend doing a single color and then doing an outline. It isn’t super fancy, but it will still look great! However, if you’d like then go all out!
4. COAT IT
This is the most important step to keep these letters around for years! Once your paint it dry, use your coating spray and spray the entire surface of the letters. Do at least 2 coats!
Your giant wooden letters are complete! Your chapter is on its way to the top! Now, you have to show them off. Post them on Snapchat. Post them on Twitter. Hey, you can even share this blog if you wanna give some credit to your teacher! DM pictures of your letters to @DIYFRATGEAR on Instagram, so we can share your masterpiece!
