DIY : 10 Things Makers Never Say – MAKE IT! – Medium

Being a true maker takes guts and you have to be ready to accept failures. Despite all the time and effort, it takes, creating things from scratch is one of the most rewarding experiences. To get a better idea, check out:

  1. Sorry, I don’t have a toolbox at home.

Nothing beats a well-maintained toolbox. A project can be difficult, but if you have the right tools and know where they are, you can do anything.

2. What’s the name of the screwdriver again? Peter?

<iframe src=”https://giphy.com/embed/8cMKmNEhubafquLLc7″ width=”480″ height=”360″ frameBorder=”0″ class=”giphy-embed” allowFullScreen></iframe><p><a href=”https://giphy.com/gifs/laff-tv-funny-reaction-8cMKmNEhubafquLLc7″>via GIPHY</a></p>

WTF! You don’t know a Phillips screwdriver? Get out!

3. These IKEA instructions are so confusing!

<iframe src=”https://giphy.com/embed/7AJdZ5SgaRQC4″ width=”480″ height=”270″ frameBorder=”0″ class=”giphy-embed” allowFullScreen></iframe><p><a href=”https://giphy.com/gifs/deadpool-ryan-reynolds-gq-7AJdZ5SgaRQC4″>via GIPHY</a></p>

OK, I admit it, IKEA instructions can sometimes be confusing. But for me as a maker, it’s more like LEGO for adults.

4. Let’s buy this quickly rather than make it ourselves.

<iframe src=”https://giphy.com/embed/c5eqVJN7oNLTq” width=”480″ height=”372″ frameBorder=”0″ class=”giphy-embed” allowFullScreen></iframe><p><a href=”https://giphy.com/gifs/c5eqVJN7oNLTq”>via GIPHY</a></p>

Sometimes making things yourself can be really exhausting. But what can I say, homemade is simply the best!

5. My hands are always sooo soft.

<iframe src=”https://giphy.com/embed/w6YEoqRpuzwtJurQdU” width=”480″ height=”360″ frameBorder=”0″ class=”giphy-embed” allowFullScreen></iframe><p><a href=”https://giphy.com/gifs/looneytunes-looney-tunes-bugs-bunny-gossamer-w6YEoqRpuzwtJurQdU”>via GIPHY</a></p>

You can use as much cream as you want, but maker’s hands are always rough. But don’t worry, your hands are a sign of how hard you’re working.

6. Who needs a basement?

<iframe src=”https://giphy.com/embed/w6YEoqRpuzwtJurQdU” width=”480″ height=”360″ frameBorder=”0″ class=”giphy-embed” allowFullScreen></iframe><p><a href=”https://giphy.com/gifs/looneytunes-looney-tunes-bugs-bunny-gossamer-w6YEoqRpuzwtJurQdU”>via GIPHY</a></p>

Let’s face it: a shed, a basement, or whatever you want to call it, is the dream of every maker. A room where all your tools have a place and where you can be loud whenever you want.

7. Fixer Upper is so boring.

<iframe src=”https://giphy.com/embed/3ohjV34UKxCoMfNe5G” width=”480″ height=”270″ frameBorder=”0″ class=”giphy-embed” allowFullScreen></iframe><p><a href=”https://giphy.com/gifs/hgtvca-hgtv-home-renovation-3ohjV34UKxCoMfNe5G”>via GIPHY</a></p>

What shall I say? Fixer Upper is the best. #DEMODAY

8. My handmade projects do not look as perfect as the ones from the shop.

<iframe src=”https://giphy.com/embed/VvXg0yjJQgfEQ” width=”480″ height=”268″ frameBorder=”0″ class=”giphy-embed” allowFullScreen></iframe><p><a href=”https://giphy.com/gifs/mrw-post-rall-VvXg0yjJQgfEQ”>via GIPHY</a></p>

Of course, homemade projects don’t look like they were bought from a store. But that’s not what it’s about! They are perfect because you made them yourself and it’s all about the process.

9. Flannel? What is this?

<iframe src=”https://giphy.com/embed/3ohA2HkH2FP0vo7DPy” width=”480″ height=”364″ frameBorder=”0″ class=”giphy-embed” allowFullScreen></iframe><p><a href=”https://giphy.com/gifs/gilmoregirls-netflix-gilmore-girls-3ohA2HkH2FP0vo7DPy”>via GIPHY</a></p>

Don’t ask me why, but in flannel, you can just work better. Is it more comfortable or fancier than other fabrics? Probably not. But that’s not the point, because every flannel shirt transforms you into a maker — with much luck.

10. Hardware stores are always so confusing.

<iframe src=”https://giphy.com/embed/3DP3lTMTGfwMo” width=”480″ height=”271″ frameBorder=”0″ class=”giphy-embed” allowFullScreen></iframe><p><a href=”https://giphy.com/gifs/3DP3lTMTGfwMo”>via GIPHY</a></p>

I love hardware stores. From a small screw to a big grill — you can find everything.
