Architecture : More Than Just a Local Cafe – Arazoo Blog
A hub of sustainability in Sonoma.
The Shed Store and Café, designed by Jensen Architects, was conceived as a place to share food, stories and local knowledge. A market café, mercantile store and meeting space come together in this modern interpretation of the traditional barn typology. Owners and sustainable farmers Cindy Daniel and Doug Lipton expressed their desire of curating an “experience that shows off the Sonoma Valley” with the new design. Their success with The Shed resulted in a James Beard Award for Restaurant Design in 2014.
The design, which focuses on sustainability, uses a resource efficient prefabricated metal structure, thermally efficient insulated metal panel cladding, and a naturally ventilated interior. There is even a walk-in refrigerator specifically for cheese-tasting! The interior is connected to the outdoors with a glazed garage door on two levels. These doors further connect occupants to the street life in front, and to the restored creekside riparian habitat which can be seen along the west façade of the building.
